Tilting and How Players Can Avoid It
Experiencing a tilt is one of the most difficult things a poker player can encounter in the course of a poker session from time to time. This is because tilting can result in the breakdown of a player's play which may ultimately lead to that player being booted out of the game and the loss of that player's bankroll.
Tilting is basically the negative effect of a player's emotion upon that player's play. The negative effects could be anything from simple bad moves to maniacal betting and other very irrational behavior in the context of poker. With such very adverse effects, players should do everything to avoid tilting as it can really wipeout an entire bankroll in one seating without the player even noticing it.
To avoid tilting, players should know its causes and what to do in case one such cause come up.
One such cause that players should look out for is frustration. Frustration leads to many things, among them impatience which in turn will lead into irrationality which is one of the main effects of tilting. To avoid frustration, players should bear in mind these reminders:
First, that it is impossible to get good cards all the time and it is just normal to have cold streaks from time to time. Second, that the same is the case with bad beats as they are also part of the game and one should not dwell upon them. Third, and perhaps the most important thing to remember to steer clear of frustration is that poker is just a game and one should not take it very seriously to the point of breaking down.
Another cause of tilting that is not as readily apparent as frustration is fatigue. Players who are playing straight for quite a number of hours are susceptible to fatigue which may result in them having bad plays and losing the profit that they have pocketed over the course of their poker session.
Players should set a predetermined number of playing hours so as to avoid catching fatigue. Many are oblivious to the feeling of fatigue and still continue playing even if their body already needs some rest which will result in their decision making processes impaired and their poker plays ineffective and futile. This is why setting a predetermined hour of playing hours important so that one can walk out of a poker session before fatigue can catch upon their body and thinking.
The causes of tilting can be hard to detect as they influence a player unconsciously which makes tilting quite hard to stop once it takes hold of a player's psyche. This makes the adage 'prevention is better than cure' very relevant in the issue of tilt in poker as the most effective way of defeating it is avoiding to catch it in the first place. This makes knowing its causes and the ways to prevent them from taking place an important task for players intent on avoiding tilts in their games.
