How Stack Sizes Affect Poker Strategy

We may not realize it but our chips on the table often affect our poker strategy. Stack size may be a good or bad poker tell, depending on our overall performance.

How much we have for a buy-in usually says volumes about our how we play, our poker strategy, and what our bating average is in poker or how much we expect to win in a game. An average buy-in may reveal a confident player who has a feasible poker strategy proven to work many times already. The player may expect some down trend but relies on either a win or breakeven situation. In other words, this player plays averagely, perhaps with a slight win advantage working on his favor.

A small buy-in may be that the player is so good and has a deadly poker strategy that really works. The player expects to build up such meager bankroll overtime with wins. Or maybe, the player will just try a few plays to see if the table is loose or tight. Some say this is indicative of a weak player who wants to lose small. Maybe, but gamblers in casinos actually sitting down at a table are seldom there just to lose some.

Of course, a huge buy-in has a mostly negative impression on the player and the poker strategy the player uses, having such amount, and poker sharks would probably run after such player "sent from heaven." Probably the player expects to lose so much first before gaining a winning trend. But the main thing here is to see how stack size is related to implied poker odds. The poker strategy revealed through the stack size is the player's positive or negative projections based on the player's hand play skills.

We know our poker skills more than anybody. When we have sized up the table mood and the capability of the players at the table, we take a seat and play. We buy-in according to our assessments of the table situations. Thus, the stack size often reflects what can be expected from us. If we're good, this poker tell warns others. If we're a bad player, this is a good sign for them.

The recommended stack size is always go for an average one. With this size we can further size up the table atmosphere and the players' abilities, and at the same time go minimum or maximum with our bets. We can build up from average, or lose some with the same.
